Ever wonder what drives people to ‘lose it’ or go ‘bonkers’? Is it a lack of humanity, ‘bad genes’ or the ‘the devil’ at work?
You see, these were just some of the words banded around when former heavy weight champion Frank Bruno was sectioned under the mental health act.
I (Rob) was lucky enough to spend a few hours with Frank earlier this week where Frank was very candid in his battle with manic depression (the same condition my dad has) and he told me it was the hardest fight of his life and, just like his epic battles in the ring.
During his darkest days with depression, he slept in a boxing ring in his back garden and cycled for hours in bare feet while wearing a gum shield… Now, eight years on, Frank is fighting fit again and told me how he has finally conquered his demons.
Looking fit enough to climb back in the ring, the 6ft 3ins, 17-stone gentle giant said “If there is one thing I’ve learned from my illness it is that there is no shame and no harm in saying you need help.”
“Mental illness can happen to anybody. You can be a dustman, a politician, a Tesco worker… anyone. It could be your dad, your brother or your aunt. People need to have compassion for others.”
This totally resonated with me, as someone who’s experienced a loved one go through the condition. The take-away lesson I learned was that anyone who has a mental health disorder shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help.
My dad is evidence you can get fixed and get your life back. At the end of the conversation, Frank rocked back in his chair and unleashed one of those infectious & famous thunderous laughs.
